The Tourist’s Director Talks to MTV About His Mega Stars

MTV has an excellent interview with the director of The Tourist, Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck. He sounds like a great director to work for – full of passion for his work, respect for his stars, and a great sense of fun.

Below are excerpts from the interview – be sure to click through and read the rest. As a huge fan of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, I LOVE that he recognizes them as the Queen and King of Hollywood… exactly what they are!

FROM MTV.com: What does an up-and-coming director do after winning the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film? If you’re the talented Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, you do not go to Disneyland; you go out and secure the talents of megawatt actors Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie for your next feature.

The already heavily-hyped film in question is “The Tourist,” loosely based on the French thriller “Anthony Zimmer.” When MTV News caught up with von Donnersmarck, we talked international intrigue, the challenges of shooting in Venice and why everyone falls in love with Johnny Depp (including his co-star Paul Bettany, who confessed his feelings to us last month).

MTV: How did you assemble such a spectacular cast?

Von Donnersmarck: I think if you create a part in the screenplay and what you describe to actors where they can show some of their acting muscle, then great actors will be attracted to those parts and will be game for it. I think what people forget often when they talk about such great stars as Angelina and Johnny, they forget that what they are, really, are actors. They’re actors with a capital “A,” but they’re much more actors than they are stars, and I think that these parts were just right for them as actors. They can really show what they can do. Angelina is so charming and delicate and feminine and strong and everything at the same time that I think when I talked to her about that part and when we worked on the screenplay together, she saw that she could really be able to do something with that part, and the same for Johnny. He shows so much of his own complexity in this part. He’s so winning, so charming, so funny, like he is in real life. I think in many ways, this part is quite close to who he is in real life. He is the most funny and charming person you’ll have ever met.

MTV: Well, we already know Paul fell in love with him …

Von Donnersmarck: It’s impossible not to. Everybody does. Same with Angelina. She is so much fun. Also, Johnny and Angie just got along so well, that was something I could sense straight from the first meeting that we had, the three of us. Believe it or not, Angie and Johnny had never met. Through all the years that they’ve been king and queen of Hollywood, they had never actually physically met, so I was the first person to ever bring them together. So if nothing else, that was a really historical moment. They just got along so well from the first moment they met that I knew it was going to be a lot of fun making this film. I probably have hours worth of bloopers where they were just laughing because they had so much fun inventing stuff on the fly and letting their incredible creativity run free.

Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie from The Tourist

Here’s a new picture that’s popped up online from The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.

A film starring the two hottest celebrities (as well as the most talented) is one that’s sure to be a hit. Both of these stars have so many outrageously loyal fans – it can’t miss.

The Tourist is based on a 2005 French film entitled Anthony Zimmer. Apparently we can expect the trailer for The Tourist in the next few weeks.

The movie is set for release December 10th.

When an American tourist (Depp) realizes that a female Interpol agent (Jolie) is using him to flush out the elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair, the stage is set for a game of international intrigue that threatens to turn deadly in this Spyglass remake of Jérôme Salle’s 2005 thriller. The film co-stars Timothy Dalton, Steven Berkoff, Paul Bettany and Rufus Sewell.

Will Angelina Jolie and Robert Pattinson Work Together?

Angelina Jolie, as you know by now, will soon have her debut as a director, for the film, “Unforgiven.” Rumors are that the movie will star one of the hottest heartthrobs of the past couple of years, Robert Pattinson. Of course, we all have to keep in mind just how reliable rumors are – just this past month we’ve seen Angelina’s name connected to every role from Cleopatra to Marilyn Monroe.

I’m kind of skeptical about anything I read anymore!

Robert Pattinson’s involvement has not, at all, been confirmed. However Deadline Hollywood reports that word has it he’s been tapped for the role of a vengeful son.

The plot of “Unforgiven” focuses on the story of a woman who spends 15 years in prison after being accused of murdering 2 policemen. She gets out determined to start afresh and leave everything behind.

However, she finds out that the past can – and often does – come back to haunt you, as the sons of one of her victims come back for revenge. One of them will reportedly be played by Robert Pattinson.

“Yesterday Deadline Hollywood came out with a report that GK Films is developing a project for Angelina Jolie, based on a 2009 BBC miniseries called Unforgiven,” Lainey Gossip writes.

“There’s speculation in the wind that Robert Pattinson has been tapped for this project (I would assume as one of the vengeful sons). He had a meeting late last year with Angelina’s lawyer, Robert Offer – and a ‘celebratory’ dinner, too – so his recent trip to see Salt with his agent is suddenly rife with new possibility,” the same e-zine writes.

Should that be the case, Pattinson would be making a very smart career move if he accepted the offer because it could make of him a bona fide star, an actor in the real sense and not just a heartthrob.

“Pattinson needs a non-romantic role. He needs something that has nothing to do with how pretty he is and would actively work against his appeal. As Fight Club turned Brad Pitt from pretty boy to man’s man, so could a violent, explosive role transform Pattinson,” the same source says.

Right now, although Angelina Jolie is extremely interested in the project, she hasn’t committed to it. Furthermore, she won’t until she has the script in her hand, as she does with every other film offer that comes her way.

As a fan of Angelina’s and Roberts, I hope the rumors prove to be true all the way around.

Angelina Jolie to Make Her Directorial Debut

Angelina Jolie will make her debut as a film director in a GK Films production of a film set during the Bosnian war, but she will not be onscreen apparently.

Angelina Jolie was in Bosnia recently with Vivienne and Knox. She met with political leaders about the plight of war refugees from the Bosnian War which occurred between 1992 and 1995. She was also seen scouting locations in Budapest over the weekend so that her family can be together while she is working.

Angelina Jolie has said of the film, “I would like to involve as many local people as possible and learn as much as I can. Casting will be exclusively various ethnicities of the former Yugoslavia.” I guess this makes it pretty clear that Brad Pitt or any of their Hollywood friends won’t be involved in the movie.

So far no start date for the movie has been disclosed.

Angelina Jolie to Begin Shooting a War Love Story

ABC News reports that Angelina Jolie is starting work on a movie about a love story set during the 1992-95 Bosnian War.

Angelina Jolie has said that shooting will begin in the autumn on the tale of a couple who meet on the eve of the war and the effect it has on their relationship.

“The film is a love story, not a political statement,” Jolie said in a statement issued on Saturday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for whom she is a goodwill ambassador.

The mega-popular star and activist arrived in Sarajevo on Friday. On Saturday, she met with members of Bosnia’s inter-ethnic presidency to discuss ways to help thousands of returning war refugees.

Angelina and Brad Pitt visited returnees in eastern Bosnia in April and promised, then, to come back.

She said the movie’s cast would be comprised of actors from the various ethnicities of the former Yugoslavia.

“I would like to involve as many local people as possible and learn as much as I can,” Jolie said.

*** By the way, Angelina recently stated that she would NOT be starring as Marilyn Monroe in a movie about the infamous sex star. It’s tough to keep up with all the rumors!

Angelina Jolie: Training for Salt

First of all, if you haven’t seen Salt, you HAVE to see it this weekend. It’s, without a doubt, one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. After my husband and I saw it, he was like, “That was a D— good movie.”

And it was.

The script was better than a lot of action movie scripts for one thing. The storyline and back story were outstanding. The directing was superb and the acting was breathtaking. Angelina Jolie and Liev Schreiber were excellent – as you’d expect them to be. Teaming them up for a movie was genius.

The action was the kind that keeps you glued to the screen – afraid to look away because you might miss something. Honestly, it was non-stop and the audience loved every exciting minute.

What makes the whole thing even more remarkable is that in the majority of the scenes, it’s really Angelina Jolie doing the work and not a stunt double!

Angelina’s trainer, Simon Crane, recently told Us Magazine that Jolie does about 99 percent of her own stunts in movies.

Crane said the actress stuck to a diet made up of 70 percent carbohydrates and 30 percent protein and ate four to five meals a day.

As for working out, he had her do anaerobic rather than aerobic exercise so she would gain muscle without losing weight. She also practiced martial arts like Muay Thai and Krav Maga for two hours three or four times a week.

She has to be one of the most dedicated, professional actresses ever.

Angelina Jolie suffered a minor injury while filming Salt, bumping her head after driving through a door.

Crane said she took “a precautionary trip to the hospital” against her will and called her “stubborn.” Reminds you of the characters she plays, doesn’t it?

Let the stupid book and it’s ridiculous statements TRY to generate buzz… Angelina’s haters will love looking for reasons to hate her. I plan to just make MORE noise than the haters do! If her fans (come on, we seriously, seriously, seriously outnumber the haters) will just turn up the volume LOUDER than theirs, we can all but ignore them.

Hit the message boards, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc – drive the haters crazy with all the praising and accolades!

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt at the LA Salt Premiere

The beard is gone and Brad Pitt is as beautiful as ever! Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were too gorgeous not to stare at – so you can’t really blame the people who did just that.

The hottest couple in the world dazzled at Monday night’s Los Angeles premiere of Jolie’s new spy thriller, Salt.

Hundreds upon hundreds of fans turned out as the couple arrived at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Angelina Jolie was as sexy and gorgeous as ever in an Emporio Armani dress and Ferragamo shoes. The gracious stars paused and greeted fans before heading inside for the screening.

At the afterparty, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt held court in a special area, surrounded by security, in the middle of Hollywood & Highland’s Grand Ballroom. One guest of honor was Angelina Jolie’s father,Jon Voight, 71, who shared a hug with his daughter.

Liev Schreiber and his partner, Naomi Watts added to the evening’s star power. Leiv Schreiber, 42, who has two small boys with Watts, told PEOPLE that he bonded with Jolie over parenting during the shoot.

“I think we’re both in that place with our kids where they’re really amazing, right around 3 years old, when all the language starts to come out of them,” Schreiber said. “It’s a very exciting period in someone’s life, both the child’s and the parent’s, and it was fun to bond over that.”

“What’s amazing about [Jolie] is the amount of things going on in her life and how calm she is in the middle of them,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told PEOPLE. “She’s an unbelievably committed mom, and she’s an unbelievably committed actress, and on human rights … it’s a whirlwind going on around her, and in the middle of it she’s as calm as can be.”

I can’t believe SALT is almost here – I may just hyperventilate right in the popcorn line. Seriously, I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for a movie. I think it was The Dark Knight or Public Enemies.

Angelina Jolie as Elizabeth Taylor? Please, please, please…

The ridiculously beautiful Elizabeth Taylor and the ridiculously handsome Richard Burton had an epic love affair. The kind of love affair that simply MUST be made into a movie.

Hollywood is putting together just such a movie and several A-list names are being mentioned to play the iconic couple.

Angelina Jolie and Catherine Zeta-Jones have expressed interest in playing Elizabeth Taylor, while Russell Crowe, Clive Owen and Colin Farrell would each love to be Richard Burton. Mike Nichols has expressed interest in directing and all the major studios would love to be a part of this film.

The film will be based on the book, Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and the Marriage of the Century, written by husband and wife team Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger. The book tells the story of Taylor and Burton’s legendary tale of love, divorce and remarriage.

Elizabeth Taylor, herself, gave access to never-before-seen materials to the duo during their book research, including Burton’s personal love letters to her. They were also given an unpublished first draft of Taylor’s 1965 autobiography, plus a portfolio of the screen icon’s favorite personal photographs, which are reproduced in the book.

The legendary actress and beauty also allowed interview questions about her and Burton’s long love affair, during which she commented on how he was the great love of her life, the partner in her longest — and shortest — marriages.

Angelina Jolie’s Quote About Politicians in Washington D.C.

Angelina Jolie, actress and activist, was recently promoting Salt in our nation’s capital. She was asked what her opinion was of politicians and Washington D.C. and she summed it up perfectly:

“Something that’s always surprised me when I get inside, and whether it be trying to push for a bill or meeting with people that are high up in power, is how human they are, and how capable they are of making mistakes,” she told us from Washington D.C while promoting her upcoming spy thriller, Salt. “They’re just people, they’re people that have landed in different positions, worked very hard, and for different reasons they’ve ended up in these positions. I think for a long time growing up, you see certain buildings and you think, ‘My God, it must be a different breed…’ something that just is beyond anything I can understand. And then you realize no, it’s just people. We’re all trying to make this work together and elect the right people. When the right people step forward and when the right people come together, extraordinary things can happen.”

When discussing the real life Russian spies and the film (talk about perfect timing!), Angelina said, “(Through the film) we’re getting a sense of what’s possible in the news. When we read (the script), we thought, there’s always been a history of spies and espionage in between countries and certainly Russia’s one of those countries and we have that history. It has happened in the past, so whether it exists today – I think it’s very possible.”
Finally, in regards to the very important work she does around the world:

“I still love spending time with refugees because I just think they are the most extraordinary survivors,” she added. “And so for me, to spend time among people who’ve really lost everything but hope, and are really tough and resilient in getting on with it, and will return and be the future of their country and rebuild it … I just… it’s been a privilege to live with them on occasion for these ten years.”

Angelina Jolie Would Love to Play Maleficent

Director Tim Burton has signed on to remake the Disney classic movie “Sleeping Beauty,” and from the beginning he has had his eye set wisely on Angelina Jolie as the lead character, the villain Maleficent.

The great news is that Angelina is interested in the role!

She said in an interview:

“I would love to. It’s all new and being discussed, but I loved her when I was a little girl. She was my favorite. Tim Burton, the chance to work with him would be extraordinary.”

Can you imagine how incredible a Tim Burton movie starring Angelina Jolie would be? They’re two of the greatest minds in the entertainment industry.

The casting of the Prince and Sleeping Beauty could be interesting…. not to mention the three fairies. If only there were a great role in the movie for Johnny Depp! Of course, if the movie revolves mostly around Maleficent, Sleeeping Beauty and her prince may not even be called for.

There could be a role for the Depp after all – fingers crossed.
